Johnson & Johnson Foundation has provided generous support of Girl Scouts’ climate science and environmental stewardship in 2022. As Earth’s temperature rises due to climate change, the weather is becoming more extreme and unpredictable, causing big changes worldwide—polar ice caps melting, wildfires, hurricanes, droughts, and extreme heat and cold. Only a substantial reduction in carbon pollution and major efforts to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere will prevent even worse climate change consequences. Unless we take definitive action to defend our planet, over a million plant and animal species face extinction.
Thanks to Johnson & Johnson Foundation’s support, this summer the Girl Scout Climate Challenge will engage Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts in grades K–12 in outdoor STEM through climate-science focused activities. In addition to getting them outdoors to learn about climate science, participants will connect with their communities to understand how they’re impacted by climate change and spread awareness to create sustainable change. Our partnership will also engage a faith-based organization and provide Spanish translations of program materials.
Additionally, Johnson & Johnson Foundation is supporting the 2022 Girl Scout Tree Promise, mobilizing Girl Scouts and communities across the nation to plant 5 million trees in five years, as well as to protect and honor existing tree cover. Girls can track the trees they’ve planted, measure their collective impact, and most importantly, learn about STEM and climate justice as it relates to trees.
As a seasoned GSUSA collaborator, Johnson & Johnson Foundation has previously supported Girl Scouts by backing:
Math in Nature badges: Three badges for each level—Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors—that help Girl Scouts explore the environment and nature using math and measurement.
