During the 2016–17 cookie season, Troop 56074 from Girl Scouts River Valleys really put its innovator muscle to the test!
The girls used a portion of their cookie earnings to purchase felt and made blankets for families in need at the Family Service Center in Ramsey County, Minnesota. The center provides temporary shelter for families in crisis and strives to provide a safe, nurturing environment as family members work to transition into permanent housing.
In addition to making the blankets, the troop hosted a family Bingo night for the center’s residents, complete with entertainment; prizes; and, of course, Girl Scout Cookies! The girls donated more than 90 boxes of cookies to the center, which is the only one of its kind in the county. Troop leader Abbie Zakrzewski calls the experience eye-opening for both herself and the girls.
In the spirit of giving a little and spending a little, the girls plan to use a portion of their cookie earnings for a troop camping weekend that will include horseback riding. That’s what Girl Scouts is all about—powering amazing adventures for girls while also helping others.
Thank you, girls, for your leadership and service to your community. Keep up the great work!
