Junior Camper Badge Activity
Knots to Know!
Learn a special skill that might come in handy at camp: knot tying!
Activity Details
Time needed: 15 minutes per knot
Materials needed:
- Nylon or cotton rope
(For camping, you’ll want to bring several feet of rope. For this activity, you’ll only need a 12- to 18-inch piece to practice knot tying.)
Setup: Knots can be used to hang up a gear, to tie tent flaps, to connect a boat to a dock, and for lots of cool crafts. Follow a tutorial in a guidebook or online or ask an older Girl Scout or another expert to teach you some basic knots, such as the square knot, the clove hitch, and the bowline.
Activity: Use online videos to learn how to tie these useful knots:
- Overhand knot
- Round turn and two half hitches
- Clove hitch
- Square / reef knot
- Sheet bend
- Bowline
