Time needed: 20–30 minutes

Setup:
Volunteer shares: “Your budget is more than just a way to track your money. Your spending habits reflect what you value. If you value socially responsible businesses, that’s where you’ll spend or invest your money. When you know what your core values are, it becomes clearer where to invest your money, time, energy, and resources.”
Activity:
Give Cadettes (6th, 7th, and 8th graders) the “Core Values” and “Values That Impact Spending” handouts.
Encourage group discussion about what’s on the lists. Have them add more to the lists.
Give each Cadette four index cards to write their top core values. On ten separate index cards, ask them to write what they’d purchase or do with imaginary money in a budget. These are their spending goals, which might include buying a new pair of sneakers, donating money to a certain charity, or saving up for a trip with their troop.
Ask them to place their four value cards in a row. Under each, have them place their goals cards with the value they think it aligns with the most.
Troop Leaders: The instructions for all badge steps are available free of charge in the Girl Scout Volunteer Toolkit.
