Spend a Little, Save a Little, Give a Little Never Looked So Good
Brownie Troop 3434 of Girl Scouts San Diego recently used a portion of its cookie earnings to help protect and care for the K-9 unit of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. After learning that the four-legged deputies sometimes encounter rattlesnakes on the job, these kind and sharp second-graders voted to use some of their hard-earned cookie money to purchase snake venom vaccines for the dogs.
Their kindness caused a ripple effect—after hearing about the troop’s plan, the veterinary clinic in charge of the animals’ care teamed up with a drug company to provide all the needed doses, free of charge. Way to inspire action in others, girls! With the vaccines funded, the girls then opted to donate $350 worth of training reward toys to the K-9 unit, and even made special care packages to show their appreciation to the animals’ deputy handlers.
This year, the powerhouse troop sold more than 5,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and was the top-selling troop in the girls’ service unit—they’re slaying this entrepreneur game! And like last year, this season, the girls worked together to decide how to use the money-saving a little, spending a little, and giving a little. According to troop leader Laurie Aschenbrenner, some of this season’s proceeds will be saved for a big trip when the girls are older, and some will be spent on badges, camping, and other activities. But this year, the girls were most excited to give!
