Florida Sisters Help Their Community in Big Ways, One Cookie at a Time
Addison, age eight, and Samantha, age 12, are not only sisters but also partners in cookie bossdom. This inspiring Brownie/Cadette team from Troop 20570 of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida (GSSEF) love to sell Girl Scout Cookies together, supporting and cheering each other on as they work toward their goals and give back to their community. For three years in a row, the two have been part of the “extreme team,” girls who sell 1,000 packages of cookies or more. Those who sell the same number as the year (for example, 2,016 packages in 2016) even get to have lunch with the CEO of GSSEF—today’s leaders lunchin’ with tomorrow’s—amazing!
“In 2015, [Samantha] sold 1,000 packages, and I sold 2,015,” Addison said. “In 2016, I sold 1,500, and she sold 2,016. I love being a Girl Scout, and getting to do it with my sister makes it even more special! [The Girl Scout Cookie Program] allows us to work together so that we can both be successful!” In 2017, the girls have so far sold more than 3,000 packages between the two of them. Way to keep reaching higher and higher, just like a Girl Scout!
Troop 20570 has currently sold over 16,000 packages of cookies in just one season—these entrepreneurs are not messing around. Even better, every year, the troop decides on a local organization to help. To date, the troop has donated 1,000 packages of cookies to Feeding America, Boca Helping Hands, Adopt a Family of the Palm Beaches, 4KIDS of South Florida, and Pediatric Oncology Support Team. The girls help the organizations by asking customers to purchase cookie packages for donation, and then forgoing their profits on those purchases to buy even more cookies, which the girls also donate. Talk about social entrepreneurship!
And beyond donating cookies, the girls make a point to visit every charity and give their time and care to help create positive change in their communities. To honor their grandfather who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Addison and Samantha even encourage their customers to donate their spare change to buy cookies for the military—that’s so thoughtful!
