Brownie Suffrage Centennial Activity
Why voting is important.
Record yourself talking about why you think voting is important.
Activity Details
Time needed: 30–45 minutes
Materials Needed:
- Writing paper
- Pen or pencil
- Voice recorder (for example, a phone or computer)
Background:
Why do you think voting is important? Why did suffragists think it was important? After you’ve thought about it yourself, ask people you know if and why they think voting is important and take notes or record them as they’re speaking. Does everyone who votes vote for the same reasons?
Activity:
Write a short piece that supports the position that voting is important. Include reasons you’ve discovered by learning about suffrage and talking to people you know. Then, record yourself reading the piece and listen to the recording. Imagine you were someone else listening to your recording: would you be convinced voting is a good idea? Make any changes you think could strengthen your position, then record yourself reading again.
Now you know what you can tell people you meet about why voting is important!
