Herstory: History, Hiking, and Hershey: July 30–August 6, 2023

Spend a week exploring everything that South Central Pennsylvania has to offer, from a Civil War battlefield to assorted museums and theme parks.

About the Trip

During this Destination, you will learn local histories through the perspectives of women dating from the colonial period through the present. You’ll also get to take part in a number of outdoor, historical, and service activities.

Take a horseback tour of the site where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought, and then explore a local farm-turned-field hospital as well as the home of Jennie Wade, the only civilian shot dead during the battle. You’ll then fast-forward to the mid-1900s by perusing the belongings of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, at their beloved Gettysburg farm.

Pennsylvania is also the home of Hershey’s chocolate! Visit the namesake theme park and tour the Hershey Story Museum, where you might get to make your very own sweet treats. At High Point Mansion and Hershey Gardens, you’ll learn about Milton and Catherine Hershey, founders of the famous American chocolate manufacturer.

At Greenwood Furnace State park, you’ll immerse yourself in the great outdoors as you walk alongside Grandma Gatewood. As the first woman known to hike solo along the entire Appalachian Trail, she will inspire you as you spend the day developing your sense of service and taking in your natural surroundings.

Lastly, experience the dangers and triumphs of colonial-era life at the Foxfire House at Camp Furnace Hills! This 18th century Swiss-German bank house provides a view into the minds of several colonial-era women. Girl Scouts will get to play alongside Lizzie, the fictional representation of an 18th century woman, as you create a variety of crafts and baked goods the old-fashioned way.
